24.Lock Your Windows PC Using USB Device With WinLockr

Windows login can protect your workstation when your away but this is not a guarantee that it wouldn't be open by other users who have an access to that computer. For added security layer, use a portable application called WinLockr which can lock and unlock windows using USB device as a key. The USB device should be first configured by WinLockr. Start WinLockr and provide a password. Then plug your USB and and choose Install on USB. When USB is plugged, the mouse and keyboard will be disabled and the screen will be locked.
To unlock your workstation, you have to provide the exact password combination. WinLockr also prevents shutdown, restart, or log off actions when it is enabled. Overall, In my opinion, WinLockr is a great tool to add extra security for your Windows PC. With it enabled, no one but you could unlock your workstation even they know the Windows login password of your computer.

WinLockr works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. I tested it on Windows 7 x86 version.

23.How to Download Drivers for Windows XP

In order for the hardware on your computer to effectively communicate with Windows, you need drivers. These snippets of code can range in size from a few kilobytes to over a hundred megabytes and are regularly updated by most manufacturers. With each update, drivers become more stable and sometimes offer advanced features and even performance boosts. Because of these updates, you might not be satisfied with simply having a driver on your computer. You might want the latest, fastest one. Typically, you can find drivers on the manufacturer's website, but if you can't find them there, there are a number of online repositories to turn to as well.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. Manufacturer's Website

    • 1
Visit the manufacturer's website, such as Asus, Nvidia, or Western Digital.
    • 2
Look for a section entitled "Drivers," "Downloads," or something similar. Click on this section.
    • 3
Enter the specifications for your computer, including which device you're seeking a driver for and the version of Windows XP you're using. Many drivers are specific to 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows XP. Be certain to download the proper type. If you're unsure which version of Windows XP you have, you can find out by clicking on Control Panel and then System Information. Download the driver.

    Driver Repositories

    • 1
Visit a driver repository such as SoftPedia or DriversKit.
    • 2
Enter the name of the device you wish to update in the search bar. Press Enter on your keyboard.
    • 3
Browse through the options to find the latest driver, or if you've discovered that the latest driver is incompatible with your system, select an earlier version. By clicking on a driver listing, you'll be brought to a page with specific information about the software, including which operating system it's compatible with. Only select a driver that's compatible with your version of Windows XP.
    • 4
Download the driver by clicking on the download link.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installing the wrong driver can sever communication between Windows XP and the device you attempted to update. Be certain to install the proper driver or else you might inadvertently impair your computer.

22.FDISK Tutorial

Primary partitions are the only one that are bootable. They're always the C: drive when active. Normally you can only have one (more with some special tricks etc.) Extended partitions are needed when you want more than one partition. You can only have ONE Extended partition. Logical Drives come into the Extended partition. They are handy since you know that you can only have one Primary and one Extended so you can get more than only two partitions. They would be your D:, E:, etc. drives.

First you need to reboot your system with the Boot Disk inserted
1.At the A: prompt start "FDISK."
2.If asked to use Large Disc support say Yes.
3.The first screen looks like this:
Create Dos Partition or Logical Drive
Set Active Partition
Delete Partitions or Logical DOS Drives
Display Partition Information
Change current fixed drive. (In case you have two or more Hard Drivess)
So, to prepare you hopefully did a backup from your data. You did, didn't you ?!
4.Next we need to remove the existing partitions. So go to 3.
5.Next screen like this:
Delete Primary DOS
Delete Extended DOS Delete Logical Drives
Delete Non-DOS
Delete always in the following order
Logical (All) > Extended > Primary (Last)
6.Go back to first screen after all partitions have been removed.
7.Now we need to setup our new partitions. Go to 1.
This screen looks like this:
Create Primary DOS
Create Extended DOS
Create Logical DOS Drives
Here we create in the following order
Primary > Extended > Logical Drives.
8.First create the Primary. If asked to use all space say No and enter the amount you wish for the C: drive. It should be set automatically to be the (only) Active partition. If not it may ask you or you have to select "2. Set active partition" from the main menu.
9.Next create the Extended Partition. Use all space left
It probably advances automatically to the next step, creating the Logical DOS Drives
10.Enter the amount you wish for the D: partition and than the rest for the third partition
Think first about the size for the partitions
OK now we're finished with FDISK so just exit it. Next you need to reboot with the disc still inserted and Format all partitions (the C: partition might need to be formatted with "format c: /s", check the Win95 tip). Another reboot and you can go ahead and install Windows

21.Installing Guide Ubuntu

Now that you have the Desktop CD, you’ll need to reboot your computer to use Ubuntu.
Your computer’s BIOS must be set to boot from CD first; otherwise, Windows will just load up again. To get into the BIOS settings, you usually have to press one of these keys during boot-up: Escape, F1, F2, F12, or Delete. Usually your computer will tell you which key to use.

Once your BIOS is configured to boot from CD first, if you have Ubuntu in the drive, you should see this screen. Ubuntu will take a couple of minutes to load up. Just be patient

Select your preferred language.
If you have at least 512 MB of RAM, you may want to select Try Ubuntu, as it will allow you to do other things (check your email, browse the web) while you’re installing Ubuntu.
If you have only 256 MB or 384 MB of RAM, you should select Install Ubuntu. This will give you the same installation screens you see below, but you won’t have the rest of the Ubuntu live session running as well.
If you have less than 256 MB of RAM, you should use the Alternate CD to install Ubuntu, or do a barebones installation.

If you choose to install Ubuntu directly, the installer will launch immediately. If you choose the Try Ubuntu option, you’ll be in the Ubuntu live session. From there, click the Install Ubuntu icon on the desktop.
You may notice that this tutorial’s screenshots are different from what you see. For example, in this tutorial, there are large icons that line the left side of the screen. You may see instead a more traditional toolbar on top and bottom (instead of the side). That’s okay. Basically, there’s a new user interface in Ubuntu 11.04 called Unity but it has certain system requirements. If Ubuntu’s installer detects your computer meets those requirements, you’ll see the large icons on the left. If not, you’ll see the more traditional user interface.

Select your language.

There is a new option in the Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 installers that asks if you want to install closed source third-party software for MP3 playback and Flash, for example. I would strongly suggest—unless you know who Richard Stallman is—that you check (or tick) this option.

If you want to install Ubuntu next to Windows so you can choose which operating system you want at boot-up, select the first option. As mentioned before, do this only if you don’t anticipate even a small possiblity of returning exclusively to Windows. A traditional dual-boot can be undone but it’s not easy.
If you want to erase Windows completely and install Ubuntu over it, select to replace Windows.
Select the third option if you know a lot about partitions and want to manually configure stuff yourself. If you know enough to select the third option, you don’t need a tutorial telling you what to do.

If you selected a dual-boot, you can use your mouse to drag the slider in the middle and pick the relative sizes on your hard drive that Windows and Ubuntu will take up respectively.

This is the no-turning-back point. If you decide to do this, your hard drive will be repartitioned and part or all of it will be formatted. Before you click this button to continue, make sure you have everything backed up.

While Ubuntu is preparing files to copy over for installation, it’ll ask you some questions. They’re self-explanatory.
Eventually, the installation will finish (the whole thing can take anywhere between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on the speed of your computer). You can either Continue Testing if you want to shutdown your computer or Restart Now if you want to restart your computer.
Either way, Ubuntu will eject your CD (or prompt you for when to remove your USB stick, if you used UNetBootIn instead of a CD burning program). The next time you boot up, you should have a working Ubuntu installation!
