23.How to Download Drivers for Windows XP

In order for the hardware on your computer to effectively communicate with Windows, you need drivers. These snippets of code can range in size from a few kilobytes to over a hundred megabytes and are regularly updated by most manufacturers. With each update, drivers become more stable and sometimes offer advanced features and even performance boosts. Because of these updates, you might not be satisfied with simply having a driver on your computer. You might want the latest, fastest one. Typically, you can find drivers on the manufacturer's website, but if you can't find them there, there are a number of online repositories to turn to as well.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. Manufacturer's Website

    • 1
Visit the manufacturer's website, such as Asus, Nvidia, or Western Digital.
    • 2
Look for a section entitled "Drivers," "Downloads," or something similar. Click on this section.
    • 3
Enter the specifications for your computer, including which device you're seeking a driver for and the version of Windows XP you're using. Many drivers are specific to 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows XP. Be certain to download the proper type. If you're unsure which version of Windows XP you have, you can find out by clicking on Control Panel and then System Information. Download the driver.

    Driver Repositories

    • 1
Visit a driver repository such as SoftPedia or DriversKit.
    • 2
Enter the name of the device you wish to update in the search bar. Press Enter on your keyboard.
    • 3
Browse through the options to find the latest driver, or if you've discovered that the latest driver is incompatible with your system, select an earlier version. By clicking on a driver listing, you'll be brought to a page with specific information about the software, including which operating system it's compatible with. Only select a driver that's compatible with your version of Windows XP.
    • 4
Download the driver by clicking on the download link.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installing the wrong driver can sever communication between Windows XP and the device you attempted to update. Be certain to install the proper driver or else you might inadvertently impair your computer.
